17 05 2012

The award-winning musical, Memphis, is currently at Dallas Music Hall at Fair Park through May 27th.  PSD got to chat with cast member Will Mann who plays Bobby in the production.  Click thru for our chat with the Dallas connected Will Mann.

From Press Release:

Memphis takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50’s, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun fell in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer.”

Will Mann who appeared on the Broadway production for Memphis is now on the tour across the country.  PSD was able to chat with the Dallas connected talent and discuss his career thus far.  We started talking about those ties to North Texas.

Will got into the theater world after the move to Desoto.

We talked about his specific vocal training at the University of North Texas.

Will then ventured to Oklahoma City University where he would train with the well respected vocal professor, Florence Birdwell.

Will gives a little more love to Florence.

We started to chat about the musical.  What was it like playing a character in a segregated time period?

Will and I talked about the amazing music in the show.

I asked if his church background helped with the gospel elements in Memphis.

Will talks about the differences between being on Broadway rather then on tour with the production.

I asked Will about the awesome fashion showcased in Memphis.

We discussed Will’s role in the production.

Will brought up how his mother has really helped promote the heck out of the Dallas run for Memphis.

We discussed how his mother and the folks behind the production both help push the musical onto kids from communities that might not be aware of musical theater.

Will discussed how this young fan base is getting to understand the current climate of marriage equality, with gay rights, thru the guise of seeing the history behind interracial marriage equality showcased in Memphis.

I asked Will where the Musical goes after Dallas.
