SXSW 2012: Friday

Friday I played host to the 2nd annual Local Edge at SXSW unoffish day party at Doc’s (more on that in a separate post). But that wasn’t the only event on my Friday agenda. I hit up the Spin day party, the Filter Showdown at Cedar Street party, and the Windish Agency showcase. Can’t stop. Won’t stop.

Spoek Mathambo

Main Attraktionz

Escort – 70s disco cruise ship jams that had the early afternoon crowd grinding. I’m not entirely sure what that sentence means.

Dionvox – I’m not entirely sure what that was.

The Big Pink – They scored a big hit with “Dominoes” two years ago, and their new material is decent enough to deserve a spin at your next dance party.

Graffiti6 – I really like them. They have an interesting spin on the Motown revival that we’ve seen over the past few years.

Fanfarlo – British indie pop just might be my number one weakness in this life.

Of Monsters and Men – My favorite band of the day. They are everthing that’s good about Mumford and Sons minus the mildly annoying gravel voice vocals. This band will be big.

Delta Spirit – I like these dudes, but this performance was rough. They said it was their 16th.

Maps and Atlases – Indie folk (more indie than folk) band from Chicago that put on one of the more impressive performances of the festival. Beards errywhere. And their records sound great on vinyl.

Cults – I’ve been looking forward to seeing them live for a while now. Their debut was one of my favorite records of last year, and they did not disappoint. Madeline’s vocals were spot on, and their doo wop throwback sound is engaging and refreshing. I love them.
