SXSW Bound with Director Daniel Stessen

1 03 2011

Director Daniel Stessen has his latest music video, Ben Harper and Relentless 7’s SKIN THIN, playing at SXSW in less then two weeks.  Daniel chatted with PSD about his wild career and in particular the amazingly well-done SKIN THIN.  Here is part 1 of a 2 part interview with Daniel.  Enjoy.

Daniel Stessen is an avant-garde talent that has the guts to stick to his in-your-face style of comedy.  In other words the guy is extremely talented and ballsy.  I started out chatting with Daniel about being a northerner and in particular a NY northerner.

Now the ol’ Syracuse University Orangemen are known for a few things, and one of them is Lacrosse!  Well our boy Daniel happens to have been a member of the ‘Cuse Lacrosse team and its there that he’d find his lead actor in the SKIN THIN video.

Mike Powell.

The search for the female lead, Jessica Lawrence, was an entirely different story.

To really understand Daniel, I think we should mention that after Syracuse he ventured over to Connecticut.  It was at the National Theater Institute in Waterford, Connecticut that Daniel would figure out what he wanted out of life.

The book Daniel was talking about is his poetry book, More Lonely Than Alone.

That art collective, PEOPLE FOOD, has some really talented people involved and Daniel talks about his friends.

Daniel talked about his first music video, for musician Chris Garneau, called Relief

And here is RELIEF by Chris Garneau and Directed by Daniel Stessen and Dori Oskowitz.

Daniel would also work on another awesome video with Chris Garneau for the song FIREFLIES.  Its a really awesome video that is a spoof on Zelda.

The video would be Daniel’s first at SXSW and helped establish himself.   Ok here is that awesome video.

Now a familiar name kept popping up when Daniel was talking about his videos.  His cinematographer, Sam Gezari, is a tremendous talent and good friend.

The work that Daniel and Sam captured on SKIN THIN is quite awe-inspiring.  The guys ventured outside of New York to capture the amazing landscape shots seen in the video.

And here is the SXSW 2011 bound video SKIN THIN by BEN HARPER AND THE RELENTLESS 7.

Check back next week as we’ll have part 2 of the interview with the dynamic Daniel Stessen.  TRUST ME YOU WANT TO CHECK BACK!!
