Austin Film Festival: The Hand Job…script reading

3 11 2010

The last event I went to at the 17th Austin Film Festival was the HILARIOUS script reading of Maggie Carey’s up-coming film THE HAND JOB.

The film will star the adorable Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation”) as an intelligent (Valedictorian of her High School) yet sexually naive teenager looking to educate herself.   Aubrey,  Bill Hader (“Saturday Night Live”, “Super Bad”, and “Pineapple Express”) and a 13 actor panel helped bring-to-life the funny script.  Truly a grand way to end my AFF experience.  The script reading was held at the awesome Rollins Theatre at The Long Center.

Bill Hader and wife, Maggie Carey, arrive at the Rollins Theater just south of Downtown Austin.

The script reading was introduced by THE BLACK LIST creator Franklin Leonard, who had THE HAND JOB include in his infamous list.

Colin Hanks (who I lost a world series bet to, more on that later), Alexa Vega, Michael Stahl, Daryl Sabara and Jessica Alba were just a few of the 15 actors that helped out by reading parts in Maggie’s script.

Maggie talked about the film having to be toned down and yet the version we heard that night was sure raunchy and genius.  The mostly biographical tale should be a wonderful film and with producer Jennifer Todd (still love Idle Hands – Jessica Alba!!) already attached the film should be a indie-gem in 2011.

The UT Alum was openly giddy that such a vast talent pool of actors helped with the reading.

With Aubrey and Hader already attached it’ll be interesting to see who all will fill-out the cast.  No matter who steps in it shouldn’t be tough to convey the laugh-out-loud quality of this script.  Everyone was giggling throughout and even Bill had “stop-down moments” that got everyone cracking up.  One sequence where Daryl and Aubrey were miming the “action” from the script almost brought down the house.  The girl sitting next to me sounded like she was laughing so hard that she farted during this sequence.  SERIOUSLY!!!

Keep this film in your back-burner because Maggie’s written one amazing script.  Can’t wait to see this on the big screen.  It was great to see the turnout of a full packed house, but also the national and local talent that was on the panel.

A real highlight of the AFF experience.  Check back on Friday as I’ll share with you about the DAVID SIMON experience at AFF.
