Famed Writer/Producer John Wells has made his feature film directing debut with, THE COMPANY MEN starring Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, and Kevin Kostner.

The on-going 17th annual Austin Film Festival showcased not only John’s new film, but he was part of a wonderful Conversation with producer Barry Josephson.  We’ll have more of that enlighten and entertaining look into John’s award-winning TV writing career later this week.  In the mean time I’d like to share with you the Q & A that followed the regional premiere, this past Saturday night, at the historic Paramount Theater.

“Bobby Walker (Ben Affleck) is living the American dream: great job, beautiful family, shiny Porsche in the garage. When corporate downsizing leaves him and co-workers Phil Woodward (Chris Cooper) and Gene McClary (Tommy Lee Jones) jobless, the three men are forced to re-define their lives as men, husbands, and fathers.”

John openly talked about his own Brother-in-Law losing his job gave him the idea for the film.  John explains how losing your job changes the way people perceive your worth and thus effects your ability to regain what you lost.

John talks about how he was forced to change the industry that the characters are involved in because his initial industry had all but vanished.

The film isn’t all about doom and gloom of losing your job.  In fact the film is quite funny, poignant and exciting.  Now an interesting character in the film is Ben Affleck’s (Paul’s) brother-in-law played masterfully well by Kevin Costner.  John talks about how Costner was cast in a smaller, yet gripping role.

Not only does John have an AMAZING CAST, he had one of the best DP’s in the industry.

John talked about the research he did into the film.

John does an amazing job breaking down the firing process.

The test screenings helped John see the power behind his film and why he told a story so much larger then he ever imagined.

Here was my actual question during the Q & A.

John does an incredible job explaining the reason why their aren’t more thoughtful films rather then blockbuster.  He explains how his market though can succeed even in horribly slow times.

We’ll hear more from the Creator of ER, WEST WING and the up-coming Showtime show SHAMELESS.  In fact continue to check in because we’ve just cracked the service of AFF.
