USA/Mexico World Cup Game Gets Ugly

13 08 2009

So Who is Number 1????

According to the score – 2 to 1 – The Mexican National Team is #1.  But lets take a look at the standings and figure out how big of a loss this was for the US of A.

First Off – The American Team is 0-23-1 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico – In other words Remembering the Alamo doesn’t work so well across the border.  This was the first game that we actually had a lead – thanks Charlie Davies for that one – but the lead only lasted 10 more minutes.  Folks don’t be to saddened the game may have an impact on South Africa 2010 – but we’re sitting ok after this heart-wrenching loss.

Team MP W D L GF GA Pts
Costa Rica 6 4 0 2 9 9 12
Honduras 6 3 1 2 10 6 10
USA 6 3 1 2 11 8 10
Mexico 6 3 0 3 8 9 9
El Salvador 6 1 2 3 6 8 5
Trinidad and Tobago 6 1 2 3 7 11 5

There are Four more games left:

Sept 5th –  El Salvador visits Us.
Sept 9th –  We travel to Trinidad and Tobago.
Oct 10th –  We Travel to Honduras.
Oct 14th – Costa Rica Vists Us.

So as you can see its still very early and with 12 total points everyone is still alive at this stage.  Now the game itself was a bit rough.

Well its always rough to be @ Azteca Stadium.  The Mexican futbol home is known for its raucous fans and well disturbing behavior during games.  Martin Rogers article on Yahoo Sports sums up some of the Dirty Tactics.  I still think that we played a solid game and the last goal by Sabah was just a luck of a good bounce.  Timmy Howard is still one of the best Goalies in the world.  We should rebound nicely with the return home against El Salvador – I think it’ll help expand our Goal Differential which to be honest is going to be huge because of the amazing play of Honduras – they really thru in that fourth eliminator team.  What I mean is only three teams make it to South Africa.  With Costa Rica having El Salvador and T & T still left they should at least get 6 points from there final 4 games.  Honduras also has the two cellar dwellers – so if we think that the top three are going to get six points out of those pairings the games with Honduras and Costa Rica are going to be key.  By not putting a bigger distance between us and Mexico we’ve allowed four teams to battle it out instead of just the top three.  The Mexican team now has two HUGE victories of the US and with them finding young gems like Giovanni Dos Santos (Tottenham Hotspur) and Andrés Guardado (Deportivo de La Coruña).

The Next two months for the American team is going to be tough – but I still like our chances.

My Final Predictions:

1. Costa Rica
2. USA
3. Mexico
4. Honduras
5. El Salvador
6. T n T
