Ken Rosenthal Time Bitches

The Macgyver of the Trade Deadline

Trying to forget about a 13-5 drubbing tonight against the Tigers as Scooter Feldman lasted 2 and 1/3. The Rangers offense that desperately needs a bat – fanned a season high 18 times tonight, as Justin Verlander cruised through 7 and K’d 13. So….I tried to distract myself with the best thing possible, which naturally is baseball trade deadline rumors and speculation.

This is the time of year where some of the best baseball insiders break news (or at least share news and credit themselves) about the latest potential wheelings and dealings in the great game. Outside of mlbtraderumors.com that I shared with you earlier today, Foxsports.com is a solid place where Rosenthal gives us the get-down.

We are all wondering if there is a shot in hell that anything gets done by 3 o’clock on Friday with the Rangers. Who knows. But we are still reading interesting things in the media that is keeping us sucked in awaiting the water to boil as we stare directly into the pot. I thought it curious that Washington be vocal about the doings of JD and Nolan.

Earlier today the Phillies dealt for Cliff Lee and increaded their chances of repeating in October. The Phils had to give up 4 prospects
with 3 at triple-A and one single-A prospect. There were quality kids, but The Phillies managed to deal for an ace and not get rid of the 3 main kids that the Jays wanted for Halladay. Oh, what if the Phils changed their minds and coule pick up business with Toronto after things went south? Yikes.

I would love it if Texas could managed a deal for Doc, but we have read that the Rangers would not part with Holland, Smoak, and Borbon. That is a tough ass thing to pull the trigger on. But if you out a gun to my sweaty temple under a heat lamp –  I might have said yes if I were John Daniels. But in the end there is a really good chance that nothing happens because the Jays GM J.P. Riccardi
will have set his asking price too high and will have to wait to ship away the AL’s best righthander who lost today against the M’s.

Texas really could use an arm, and there are some cheaper (as in prospects, the club is broke) alternatives as far as arms go. I could envision the Rangers getting a Jarrod Washburn, Zach Duke, Bronson Arroyo, or Aaron Harang. I don’t really like any of these guys, but with the current rash of injuries or illness to the Texas rotation I wouldn’t ignore a discussion about any of them.

I stated above that Texas could use a bat, but I am not sure what deal has really been discussed after Ryan Garko was shipped to the Giants instead of the Rangers. It is so very hard to believe that this club leads the AL in strikeouts, yet is just 3.5 back for the Angels in the AL West and 1.5 back of Boston in the Wild Card chase. Josh is hitting .220’s and Ian is under .250 and dealing now with a strained hammy. Says a lot about the unexpected success of the rotation no matter who seems to step into it, as the bullpen is a top 3 pen in the AL. How often could we as Ranger fans ever say that?

What happened to the “Rangers are the cute girl at Prom” analogy? Come on, she’s available, she’s got potential, nobody’s gonna make fun of you for going home with her like they would have 2 years ago when she was a pock-marked, slightly chubby sophomore.

TONE RANGER

love the prom analogy! i invented the late bloomer analogy: she is just starting to come into her own. curves developing naturally, losing the baby fat, personality refining, wisdom acquiring, etc. BUT, she’s gotten her first attn from cute guys and now wants the HOT guys’ attn…she’s flirting with over-zealous surgical upgrades. she might want it all too fast. she can either continue to lose the extra chub, lean up, then she only has to add a full C or small D. OR, keep the 15 lbs of baggage, add DD’s, and hope to get by on star power. DD’s on a girl with 15 extra lbs is not near as sexxxy as a full C/ small D on little petite fit girl. IMO…
